On Friday 26th October we hosted an invitation only lunch for leading directors in Canterbury, generously sponsored by Sheffield Executive Search Group. Our aim – with support from Mike Stenhouse and Sheffield - is to make this an annual event for our most experienced practising members, leading to stimulating and inspiring conversations amongst peers. IoD CEO Kirsten Paterson also attended.

Our inaugural speaker was Craig Stobo, a professional director of several NZX listed companies, investor and longstanding advisor to Central and Local Government on financial and economic policy. Craig spoke to three key challenges, which led to many conversations:

Board appointment panels. Given skill sets required in each case on a particular Board, we cannot expect to improve diversity if appointment panels themselves are non-diverse.
Localisation. Perhaps a trend, certainly keep in mind, creating tensions. Expect more debate on this.
Directors have a fundamental role to set standards, continually reinforce values and lead debates both inside and outside the business

Craig also touched on the advocacy work a company he chairs (Elevation Capital) is undertaking to influence change and better performance at NZX. Expect to hear more.

This event was a great success and we look forward to a repeat next September.
