The New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (NZIST) is the new entity responsible for ensuring equity and excellence for all New Zealanders in the area of vocational education. Its key functions include; improving outcomes for Māori and Māori communities in collaboration with Māori and iwi partners and stakeholders; improving the consistency of vocational education and training; meeting the needs of the regions of New Zealand and their learners, industries, employers and communities; ensuring that every learner receives what they need to be successful, and to improve outcomes in the tertiary education system as a whole.
This is a senior role, reporting directly to the CEO with a particular focus on qualifications, academic standards, the mix-of-provision and delivery and investment plans, and leading a coherent and co-ordinated national academic strategy that ensures products and services are relevant for employers, industry, iwi, and communities as well as focussing on the future needs of New Zealand.
This role will have specific responsibility for:
- Leading the development, monitoring and negotiation of NZIST’s education delivery plans (investment plan and mix of provision).
- Driving consistent programme design, development, and harmonisation, utilising skill standards, while also balancing region and community needs and contexts.
- Working closely with employers to strengthen, improve and where appropriate fundamentally change how learning and support is delivered through all modes (online, campus based, at the employer’s place of work), harmonising and aligning programmes and focussing resources on delivery to support learners across the country.
- Leading the ongoing development and continuous improvement of vocational education and training that ensures that learners can move easily between training in a classroom and training in a workplace, as well as across different campuses.
- Leading the development of international education strategies, business opportunities and operating models, in co-ordination with other executives, that raise the standard of vocational education in New Zealand.
- Drawing on best of existing practices, and offering high quality culturally responsive teaching and learning.
- Leading the development of applied research that supports and strengthens research across the network.
- Work collaboratively with other education providers, especially wananga and PTEs to deliver and support vocational education across New Zealand.
- Chairing the Academic Board when this is established.
Candidates of interest will have an advanced level tertiary qualification and possess significant experience supporting or leading large-scale organisational transformation. Prior experience in a senior academic role in a tertiary educational setting is essential. As a future focussed thought leader you will also have a demonstrated record of empowering leadership, effective and highly developed strategic management skills within the tertiary sector coupled with exceptional communication skills and the ability to engage across multiple stakeholder groups.
