The Region

Marlborough’s strategic central location at Te Tauihu (the Top of the South) provides an easy connection to the rest of New Zealand. Marlborough is ‘big enough yet small enough’ — there’s a sense of connectedness and freedom while working and living here.  With 51,900 residents, Marlborough offers all the facilities of a larger centre without the cost, travel time or stress. It’s easy to get around. Locals call it the ‘seven-minute commute’ – including from its main centre, Blenheim Waiharakeke, to the airport.

More than 50% of Marlborough’s economic activity originates from the land and the ocean. The biggest economic drivers are the wine and viticulture, aquaculture, farming, food and fibre, and forestry and wood processing industries. These sectors live side-by-side with a healthy visitor economy. Emerging sectors include technology and innovation — primarily agritech solutions — medical cannabis, and the screen and creative industries. The economy is supported by established engineering and manufacturing industries as well as construction and professional services sectors.

A big industry shared across the Te Tauihu with Nelson/Tasman is the ‘blue economy’ which includes kai moana (seafood) and aquaculture.
