Aronga | About The Role
The General Manager Finance and Assurance is a newly enhanced broad commercial and corporate role, leading Council’s financial performance, risk, assurance, security management, stewardship of assets (including a large land portfolio), procurement, facilities management (including property, plant, and fleet), business development / commercial opportunities. Leading and developing a team of approximately twenty people, here’s an opportunity to look up and out, to shape and lift this function ensuring Council’s three core services add value to its communities.
Key areas of focus will include:
- Strategic financial leadership focused on adding value, as well as the typical CFO duties including overseeing day-to-day financial operations, planning, reporting and treasury management;
- Leading the development, monitoring and reporting of the multi-year capital programme;
- Identification of commercial opportunities to generate income related to Council land and property, public transport and solar farm developments;
- Leadership of the financial aspects of the long-term plan and annual plan and associated reporting
- Lead GM for the Audit & Risk Committee and reporting finance and assurance matters to senior management, CE and Council;
- Leading the replacement of the financial and contract management system;
- To contribute effectively toward the valued relationship with all Papatipu Rūnanga within the Waitaha Canterbury rohe and Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu.
Mātau ā-wheako | Skills & Experience
Ideally you will be a Chartered Accountant (or equivalent), with substantial experience leading teams in a large, complex organisation, requiring strategic impact, financial acumen and management of multiple stakeholder pressures, ideally in a local or central government environment. You will:
- Preferably have proven experience in a senior corporate / commercial role – as this is much broader than a pure finance/ accounting role;
- Be comfortable leading change in a dynamic environment such as this;
- Point to a strong track record managing stakeholder relationships successfully;
- Have high credibility and experience as a trusted advisor working with Boards/Councillors;
- Have demonstrated strong political awareness, business acumen and strategic agility;
- Be known as a professional leader who relates well to all kinds of people, builds rapport quickly and is easy to approach.
