Why Swell & Why Now?

Swell exists to help Kiwi businesses access government funding to accelerate their innovation and growth.  We simplify the funding process so our clients can focus on doing what they do best: building world-class innovations.

Our small but mighty team combines international experience with local know-how to deliver outstanding results.  We help clients extend cash flow, invest in new technology, expand their reach, and hire the right people.  And we’re just getting started.

What’s the role?

As Business Development Coordinator, you'll be the linchpin that keeps our growth engine running smoothly. You'll drive top-of-funnel activity across both R&D Tax Incentives (RDTI) and Grants services, ensuring the commercial team always has quality opportunities to work with.

Day to day, you'll run always-on lead generation, qualify inbound and outbound opportunities, own validation for lower-value leads and provide essential sales support that frees up our Business Development and Growth teams to focus on high-value activities and partnerships.

You'll also be the guardian of our HubSpot CRM, ensuring data quality and accuracy that enables smart business decisions. Think of yourself as part sales operations, part lead generation specialist, part enabler - making sure nothing falls through the cracks and everyone has what they need to succeed.

This role is perfect for someone who loves variety, gets satisfaction from keeping systems humming, and wants to build expertise in sales operations whilst developing their Business Development skillset.

What skills and experience do I need?

These are our must-haves:

  • 2+ years in a sales support or business development role
  • Proven experience in lead generation and qualification
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Self-starter with ability to work independently
  • Highly coachable and growth-oriented

These are other skills we'd love you to have:

  • Experience with HubSpot or similar CRM platforms
  • Familiarity with digital sales tools (LinkedIn Sales Navigator, email automation, etc.)
  • Experience with DocuSign, ChatGPT, Canva, and other digital tools
  • Understanding of B2B sales cycles
  • Previous exposure to technical or professional services sales

You'll also be able to demonstrate:

  • Pipeline builder: You consistently generate quality leads and maintain a healthy pipeline of opportunities
  • Detail-oriented: You maintain exceptional data quality and follow processes meticulously
  • Commercially curious: You understand what drives business decisions and how to qualify opportunities effectively
  • Team enabler: You actively support the commercial team and make their jobs easier
  • Digitally savvy: You're comfortable using and learning new tools, including AI, to improve efficiency
  • Process improver: You proactively identify bottlenecks and suggest solutions
  • Growth mindset: You're eager to learn, develop skills, and progress into a Business Development Manager role
  • Adaptable: You thrive in a fast-paced environment and are comfortable with ambiguity

What we'd like to know about you:

To help us understand your experience and approach, please address the following questions in your cover letter:

  1. Describe a time when you had to manage multiple competing priorities in a sales or business development environment. How did you stay organised, and what system or approach worked best for you?
  2. Tell us about your experience with lead generation. What methods have you used, and which have you found most effective? What made them work?
  3. Think about a time when you spotted a problem with a process or system that was slowing things down. What did you do about it, and what was the result?

What's the culture like?

We thrive on collaboration and want to work and partner with great people to help Kiwi businesses make waves on the world stage. Everyone's voice matters at Swell—we value the unique insights, skills, and experiences that each individual contributes.

If you're looking for a place where you can make an impact, be part of a supportive team, and work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, you'll fit right in at Swell.

Timeline

We're building our growth team strategically and are currently also recruiting for a Business Development Manager. We're looking to align the start dates for both roles to 1 April 2026, allowing for a coordinated onboarding and team launch.

Given the timing over the end-of-year break, applications will be reviewed from the week beginning 19 January 2026. This means you can take your time crafting a thoughtful application over the holiday period, and we'll be in touch in the New Year to progress suitable candidates through our interview process.
