When you apply for a job these days, it’s not uncommon to go through some sort of psychometric assessment. Given the relatively high cost of “bad hire” they play an increasingly important role, especially for more senior positions.

Some candidates express concern in relation to these types of assessments, but do remember that if you’re being asked to go through this process it usually means you’re down to the final few and you must have done something to impresses the employer. So congratulations, you obviously display good potential!

The big thing to remember with psychometric assessments is that they’re not something you can pass or fail; you are simply compared against others who have already completed the assessments. As such it’s important to answer questions honestly and as accurately as possible.

I’ve seen candidates perform well and others succumb to the pressure. So next time you’re being assessed, keep in mind these points before you start the assessment(s):

  • Get a good sleep the night before.
  • Eat well on the day.
  • If you feel ill, reschedule.
  • Make sure you’re sitting down in a quiet comfortable environment with plenty of light.
  • Have your reading glasses handy if you need them.
  • Some tests take longer than others so ensure you’ve set aside the required time.
  • Turn off your mobile phone.
  • If you’re using a laptop or tablet, ensure it’s plugged in, or that there’s a full battery.
  • Make sure your mouse works and it has a full battery (if necessary).
  • Ensure you’re not going to be interrupted.

Finally, try to be calm. Remember that the assessments are not out to get you, they’re there to provide others an insight into your ability, personal attributes and your potential fit for a role.
