Registrar
Wellington
The Medical Sciences Secretariat (MSS) provides essential business and regulatory services to the Medical Sciences Council (MSC) and the Medical Radiation Technologists Board (MRTB) ensuring that practitioners in the medical laboratory science, anaesthetic technology, medical imaging, and radiation therapy professions are competent, fit to practise, and meet the highest professional standards. Our work is focussed on the health and safety of members of the public and in upholding trust and confidence in these professions.
We are currently seeking a dedicated Registrar to play a key role in the regulatory functions of the MSC and MRTB. This is a leadership position where you will oversee compliance with the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act (HPCA), manage practitioner risk and complaints, and provide expert advice to support best-practice regulation. This is a role where your expertise in regulation, policy, and governance can make a significant impact in the health sector.
Key Responsibilities:
- Regulatory Leadership – Ensure compliance with statutory responsibilities under the HPCA.
- Risk and Complaints Management – Proactively manage notifications, complaints, and practitioner risk to protect public safety.
- Team Leadership – Provide guidance and support to the Deputy Registrar and a small team of Advisors.
- Policy and Process Development – Contribute to shaping regulatory policies and improving processes.
- Stakeholder Engagement – Build strong relationships with government agencies, health authorities, legal professionals, and other regulatory bodies to support best practice.
About You:
This role is a great fit for someone who is legally trained, with strong leadership capabilities, and who has the ability to interpret and apply complex legislation. You will be highly organised, a clear communicator, and confident in making decisions that balance fairness, professional standards, and public interest.
This role also requires a collaborative approach—you will work with a range of stakeholders across the health sector, legal networks, and professional governance. A talent for working in a way that embodies community partnership will be a hallmark of success in this role.
