- Lead Canterbury’s construction pipeline – deliver a circa $100m portfolio
- Senior regional leader – vertical construction, commercial and project management
- Commercial ownership – drive the region’s P&L and client relationships
A business built on relationships.
Calder Stewart has been delivering property and construction solutions across New Zealand since 1955. A family-owned business with generations of proven experience, they are known for doing what they say, building for the long term, and for the quality of the relationships they keep - with clients, with subcontractors, and with their people.
Guided by values of ‘finding a way’, ‘playing fair’, ‘being loyal’ and ‘owning it’, their purpose is straightforward: to build a strong future for their people, their customers and the communities they work in. Canterbury is one of three major regions, and this is a significant strategic opportunity in a well-respected business.
The Opportunity
Due to an internal promotion, we are excited to go to market with this rare opportunity. Reporting to the General Manager Construction you will lead the Canterbury branch, a strategically important region, with a team circa 80 people across estimating, quantity surveying, project management, site management and operations.
Your focus will be threefold: converting opportunities into committed work, delivering projects profitably and safely, and developing the people and culture that make both possible. You will manage a live portfolio of projects valued around $100m per year.
This is a hands-on commercial leadership role and you will be across the numbers. This is a long-term relationship business built on family values, so you will be a natural connector, networker and emotionally intelligent.
What You’ll Bring
You will be known as an ‘all-rounder’ and ‘people person’, with a strong commercial skillset and proven leadership success in communicating a clear vision, translating it into strategy and driving it through to operational outcomes. You will have:
- Significant vertical construction management experience - likely 10 years or more in a senior role
- Strong commercial instincts: pipeline management, margin awareness, financial discipline
- An honest, grounded leadership style that builds culture and earns trust across diverse teams and clients
- A network in the Canterbury construction and property sector
- Proven track record of securing and delivering a substantial project pipeline
- Demonstrated ability to convert opportunities into committed work
- Proven ability to lead and develop people at every level, from site managers to senior commercial staff
- Sound understanding of Design-Build methodology and construction contract legislation
- A strong commitment to health and safety.
Candidates currently based outside Canterbury or offshore are encouraged to apply if they have strong Canterbury connections or are ready to return here.
