Congratulations to Mike Shapland who has been appointed to the role of General Manager Antarctic Operations with Antarctica New Zealand. Sheffield South Island were thrilled to partner with Antarctica New Zealand in the appointment of Mike into this role, which oversees the planning and execution of Antarctic operations, along with managing the assets and engineering portfolio at Scott Base.
Having spent 40 years in the NZ Defence Force, Mike is deeply experienced leading operations and logistics and previously worked in Antarctica when he was deployed there in 1991. As the Force Chief of Staff to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), he was responsible for the planning, conduct and oversight of peacekeeping operations for more than 17,000 military staff from more than 50 countries.
More recently, Mike has been posted as the Defence Attaché based at the New Zealand Embassy in Washington DC and he is looking forward to coming home to Christchurch.
We have no doubt Mike that you will make an excellent contribution to the team at Antarctica NZ and their work at Scott Base.
