Distinguished geographer and climate expert appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor Arts, Law, Psychology and Social Sciences

Professor Tim Smith is set to join the University as its new Pro Vice-Chancellor Arts, Law, Psychology and Social Sciences.

Professor Smith is currently Dean of the Faculty of Environment, Society and Design at Lincoln University. He holds a BAppSc(Hons) from Southern Cross University and a PhD in Geography from the University of New South Wales.

An accomplished researcher in the field of human geography and coastal management, Professor Smith has experience in a range of academic leadership roles and leading major research projects, combined with management positions in the private and government sectors.

Professor Smith says he is excited about the opportunity and to be moving to the University of Waikato.

“The world is facing significant global challenges such as increased geo-political tensions, the rise of authoritarian regimes, climate change, and biodiversity loss. These challenges are both caused and solved through social processes. The humanities, arts and social sciences are essential to interdisciplinary innovations that address complex challenges and support sustainable, adaptive and prosperous futures.

“The University of Waikato has unique strengths and insights across these disciplines, and I look forward to the opportunity to create lasting research impact and inspire students to study and learn from our talented people.”

Professor Smith’s research is particularly focused on climate vulnerability and adaptation, the outcomes of which support the achievement of sustainable livelihoods in multiple countries.

He holds honorary positions including Emeritus Professor at University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia, Affiliated Professor at Uppsala University, Sweden, and Adjunct Professor at Brock University, Canada.

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Australian Geographers and last year was named a Fellow of the Queensland Academy of Arts and Sciences.
