New Zealand Association of Counsellors, Roopu Kaiwhiriwhiri o Aotearoa (NZAC) are a professional membership body that represents the majority of counsellors in New Zealand. We have around 3,000 members and offer registration for counsellors who meet our rigorous training, qualification and professional development standards.

Our work sees us align closely with other health professionals in a multi-disciplinary approach that includes working health providers, community and Iwi social services, culture-specific organisations, educational, justice, government, and non-government agencies. Everything we do seeks to uphold high standards of proficiency and ethical practice for all members.

Currently NZAC is seeking to appoint an Executive Director who will lead in the promotion of professional counselling in Aotearoa, and develop, operate and evaluate NZAC structures in line with our vision, objectives and code of ethics.

Incorporating our responsibilities to Te Tiriti o Waitangi is an essential aspect of this role, as is supporting the National Executive through the continued emphasis on ethical practice, research, and continuing professional development. The Executive Director will represent the work of the National Executive in specific strategic areas, including advocacy with government, as well as promoting NZAC to various stakeholders. The role also incorporates oversight of our business operations, and will provide excellent line management to a small team, partnering with them to develop their capabilities and competence.

Preferred candidates for the role will have a background in leading or advisory work in a comparable environment. Member engagement and advocacy is central to this role, and the Executive Director will be adept at partnering with all stakeholders and will show sophistication in advocating for members’ interests across the health sector. Courageous leadership, high EQ, and an ability to balance operational output with strategic oversight, will all be important for success in this position.
