  • Leading Independent Co-educational Preparatory School

About the School:

Waihi is an independent preparatory school for children in years four to eight, catering to both day and boarding students in their magnificent and established school grounds in rural Winchester, South Canterbury. Strong values have shaped the school, along with the belief that every child is unique and should have access to an education that will nourish them; academically, physically, culturally and spiritually.

For over a century, Waihi has laid the foundations for achievement and success. Young Waihians have enjoyed an outstanding education and created habits and friendships for life. All with the guidance of Waihi’s specialist team of educators, small classroom sizes and the caring and supportive nature of all the extended Waihi staff and family.  Waihi is an Anglican school, with an education rooted in a Christian-based values system that is more relevant to our children than it has ever been, as traditional values are being constantly challenged,

Waihi punches above its weight, academically, culturally and on the sports field, both locally and nationally, with innovative programmes in Music, STEM, Outdoor Education and Equestrian, an excellent Choir, Kapa Haka, and school Production.

Our roll is currently 125, with 60 boarding students.  With first class boarding facilities and expansive grounds, the teaching and learning spaces have recently been extended with new classroom facilities.  Campus master-planning will see the addition of new boarding facilities and an indoor sports centre, to add to the indoor pool and equestrian space already in use.
