About the Organisation:
The New Zealand Game Animal Council (GAC) is a statutory entity established under the Game Animal Council Act 2013. It has a broad range of functions, including providing advice and making recommendations to the Minister for Hunting and Fishing on matters relating to hunting and game animals (deer, chamois, tahr and wild pigs).
About The Role:
The CEO plays a pivotal role in shaping all facets of the organisation, including strategic direction, financial planning and performance, organisational culture, and overarching vision.
Working closely with the Council Chair, Council members, staff, and contractors, the CEO sets and implements the strategic direction and workplan of the GAC, in alignment with its legislated functions.
The role offers flexible working hours and location. A significant amount of travel is required around New Zealand, meeting stakeholders as well as attending and speaking at events.
There are four direct reports.
The Ideal Person:
As the ideal candidate, you will have the ability to deliver and develop the GACs vision: the sustainable management of game animals and hunting for recreation, communities, commerce and conservation. Excellent at forging credible relationships, you will actively engage across the hunting and conservation sectors as well as with external stakeholders such as ministers, government departments, NGOs, Iwi and the media.
You will be an effective communicator, tailoring your message for the right audience and media. You will also recognise the importance of backing balanced advocacy with solid science and research.
Your collaborative and inclusive approach will ensure successful navigation through complex situations particularly in relation to managing wildlife within potentially charged social and cultural environments.
A talented leader of others, you will continue to support and enhance GAC’s culture of success.
In addition, you will have:
- a tertiary qualification in a relevant field.
- a keen interest and experience in hunting, game animal management, recreation and conservation.
- proven operational management experience including setting strategy and work plans, financial budgeting and oversight and reporting to a board.
- proven people leadership as well as an ability to lead remotely.
- sound knowledge and understanding of New Zealand’s political and legislative processes.
- an understanding, or experience of, a governing body and operating within a regulatory environment.
- an understanding and working knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi combined with a respect for mana whenua.
Culture:
GAC is committed to providing a working environment that embraces and values inclusion and diversity.
The GAC acknowledges the importance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi), and it is expected that the CEO has an appreciation of how this can be implemented in practice. The CEO will be supported by the Council Te Kāhui Māori Subcommittee in this regard.
